Black Oystercatcher Gallery

Approaching Darkness
The rocks at Yaquina Head are naturally black due to their volcanic history. The black oystercatcher of the west coast is aptly named, as it lacks the partial white coloring of its cousin on the east coast, the American oystercatcher. Both oystercatchers share the almost comically bright bills and eyes, one of the endearing features of these coastal birds.

Frolicking in the Surf
Two oystercatchers were frolicking in the surf at Seal Rock State Park on the Oregon coast, bathing in the salt water as the waves rolled onto the beach. I was afraid the waves would sweep the little birds away but they were in their element, more worried about keeping their distance from people and dogs than the relentless power of the sea.
