My wife and I visited the redwoods for the first time on our honeymoon in the fall of 1998, but it wouldn't be until the spring of 2009 that I made my return to this wonderful park. On the return trip, I was able to spend a week hiking in the forests, watching deer and elk in the meadows, and gingerly stepping among the tidepools on the beach.
| While the park has other charms, of course everyone comes here to see the giant trees. I fell in love with their character as much as their height and girth. | The redwood forests are the dominant theme of the park, with the giant trees stretching to the skies and ferns covering the forest floor, but smaller treasures like trillium and skunk cabbage can also be seen. | ||
| When planning my trip, I was surprised to see that the park also encompassed some beach areas with access to tidepools. | Several large meadows in the southern part of the park provide excellent viewing of both Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer. The forests are also home to the famous banana slug, one look and you'll understand the name. |
