Don’t Hold Back

Male yellow-headed blackbird sings while perched atop a cattail at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

Another from last week of a male yellow-headed blackbird really giving it his all.

I have to admire not just how much they throw themselves into their songs, but that they do it knowing it will attract the mobbing attention of other male yellowheads and the resident redwings.

So far this year I haven’t yet seen the reason for this grand show, the female yellowheads, but you can see the males spaced out around the marsh, singing from their high perches atop the cattails. They’re in near constant motion as they establish the boundaries of their territory and chase off interlopers. In flight, the white bars on their wings becomes much more obvious.
