It Only Took 14 Months

Emma is curled up in one of the heated beds for the first time since we brought her home fourteen months ago. She’s been poking around in them the past few days and finally decided to try one out. Sam and Scout have long been fans and can often be found in the two beds, but at the moment Emma and Sam are in the beds and Scout is on the window seat.

Time will tell if this proves a popular spot for Emma, but it appears she’s finally cottoned on to why the other cats like them so much, especially during the winter. No one has tried to usurp Scout’s spot above the heater vent, which is probably for the best — every queen needs a throne.

Thank You Little One, Thank You

A young hoary marmot sits in front of fall colors on the Summerland Trail in the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park

Back in the fall I spent the afternoon watching the large colony of marmots at the end of the Summerland Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, but it wasn’t until the tail end of my day that I spotted this youngster, the only young one I saw on the day. It was so much smaller than the other marmots that I’d guess that it had been born in the spring and was about to face its first winter.

As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, some of the marmots started to head up towards what I assume was their home in the rocks above the trail. When the little one jumped down to follow, it landed on an unstable rock that crashed loudly onto the rocks below. The other marmots rose and froze to attention while the youngster sprinted up and away. I’m so jealous of how marmots speed across a jumbled talus field compared to my slow plodding even on the open trail that it was nice to see that even they occasionally put a foot wrong.

Ellie Gets Goosed

My wife took Ellie today to get groomed and she looks and smells fantastic. We weren’t sure how she would do since it was our first time taking her, but of course she charmed the pants off everyone. I wish I had half the charm of my pets!

My wife also picked up a toy goose for her to play with, an instant success with our retriever. Unlike a true Canada goose, Ellie’s goose honks when you squeeze it. Actually a real goose might do that too, but Ellie’s goose won’t bite you for your troubles.

Ellie apparently climbed into bed with me this morning after my wife got up, she didn’t wake me up but when my wife came to get her for a walk, there she was curled up beside me. She loves to snuggle and we know how fortunate we are to have found such a lovely dog.

I Broke My Dog! I Broke My Dog!

Today was a shutdown day at work, so instead of my usual workday routine here is how the day unfolded:

  • Sleep in with the cats all around me
  • Play with Ellie
  • Play with the cats
  • Play with Ellie
  • Eat lunch
  • Play with Ellie
  • Take Ellie to obedience training
  • Play with Ellie
  • Take Ellie for a walk
  • Play with the cats

Except in between playing with Ellie and taking her for a walk, there was a vet visit. We were playing ball in the backyard when all of a sudden she came up limp with her left paw hanging lifelessly and all I could think was “I broke my dog! I broke my dog!”

The vet was able to see her right away and as we walked her down to the car she was able to put weight on it, so I started to breathe a little easier. The vet gave her a good checkup and while we don’t know exactly what happened, it doesn’t appear to be serious so she may have just sprained her ankle.

She gets a week of taking it easy so we can watch for signs of trouble, which means no horseplay. Ellie tried to convince me that the vet actually said “mo’ horseplay”. Bless your heart Ellie, I can’t fault you for trying, but I didn’t just fall off a turnip truck. She and my wife are sleeping in the basement while Scout and Emma are snoring in harmony beside me.
