Ellie & the Lizards

Our dog Ellie resting on her dog bed

Ellie got a new baby hedgehog for Christmas. Does she like it? Well, when I stepped out of the shower yesterday morning, Ellie and new baby hedgehog were staring back at me. She’s been carrying it all over the house, which she usually does for a few days until it is properly broken in.

More playing with Instagram, this one is of Ellie resting in my office on the dog bed my wife made for her.

The Snuggliest Creature Ever to Walk the Earth

Our cat Sam resting on the futon

Sam and Emma came to live with us just over three years ago, Ellie just under two. Last Christmas and this, we managed to avoid adding more pets to the household, which is good because the bed is full up. Emma rarely joins us at night but when I wake up Sam, Scout, and Ellie are usually sharing the bed. And oftentimes a hedgehog.

Once they detect I’m awake, they come snuggling up for attention. Sometimes one of them will “accidentally” wake me, making me wonder if they cast lots in the darkness to see who should wake me this time. To be fair there’s no “accidentally” about it when Scout wakes me, she has always considered this to be her divine right and makes no apologies.

Sam usually snuggles up tight throughout the night. If synchronized spooning were an Olympic event we’d be gold medalists every time, we’ve perfected the art of me slowly turning over while he keeps tucked up tight against me.

This picture is of Sam in a rare non-snuggling moment.

The Good & Gentle Queen

Our cat Scout sitting in her heated bed

We just ordered a new heated bed since there has been contention between the three cats and the two beds. Scout considers one of them to be hers, and the others mostly concede the point, although last week Sam kept sleeping in it when Emma was in the other one. Scout is too polite to evict him, so instead she comes over and grumbles incessantly at me until I get up and move him.

Fortunately Sam has backed off from his land grab and gone back to either sharing the other with Emma or, even better, seeking out the first available lap.

Merry Christmas!

Our cat Emma yawning under the Christmas tree

Hope you spent a Merry Christmas hedgehogging with your loved ones.

I’ve been playing around a bit with Instagram on the iPhone, this is Emma yawning underneath our Christmas tree. Or her Christmas tree, as she thinks of it, that she generously shares with the rest of us.
