The funny thing is, his expression is not unusual when they are goofing around. Sam takes his play very seriously. And for the record, Emma would like it clarified that she strikes no low blows ;)

Around 700 or 800 yesterday, which is more than normal for a place like Ridgefield that I visit so often. The yellowheads are only here for a couple of months, and they were putting on quite a show, so I didn't hold back (thank heavens for digital cameras).

There are many things that can go wrong, especially with how much yellowheads move when they sing and how varied their pose can be, and the normal camera issues like focus and exposure, plus my mistakes (they can be legion), so I took a lot of pictures. I like yellowheads so some pictures were just to remember them by.

There are a few more that are probably web worthy, plus a couple of song sparrows, a barn swallow, red-winged blackbirds, and maybe a ruddy duck.

I've thought about putting together a page that shows how I weed down from a large take of images to the handful that are the best, but I've never gotten around to it. This visit would be a perfect example if I do it.

about how many pictures do you take in 6 hours? That is, total, not good ones or favorite ones or the ones you keep.

I saw one nutria and one something else that was probably a nutria.

A good slogan is certainly the most important part of any campaign, although yours is decidedly un-Manifest Destiny-ish and headed in the wrong direction. I don't want to cross the border just to go to Yellowstone.

Still, perhaps you're on the right track with the kindler, gentler approach and my campaign needs to be an advertising campaign and not a military one. After all the White House got torched the last time we invaded, and there are probably even more countries (and blue states) that will come to their aid now than in 1812.

You can be at the vanguard of my advertising blitz, taking armfuls of kittens across the border wearing sweaters that say "racphoto.com". We'll hit Vancouver and Victoria and Edmonton and Montreal and Calgary and Wetaskiwin too, conquering with cuteness (sharp claws deployed only as a last resort).

I'll get my wife to knit up a prototype. I'll also let her put it on Scout, I'm going to stand across the room, or maybe in another room altogether. Or maybe even outside.

That is, my slogan would be something like Forty-Five* Is All Right! Thank You Kindly!

*Not wanting to impose my desire for Canadian oversight upon the entire US, as long as Portland is subsumed, I'll be happy. This may not be the invasion plan you were suggesting.

I'm thinking about trying a writing challenge I read on an acquaintance's blog: commit to writing at least 100 words of new fiction (that is not revision or blogging or email) every day for 100 days. If you miss a day, you're supposed to start the count over again. Writing more than 100 words is OK, but the daily goal is only 100.

I hope you can find a way to keep the site up without it taking up more time or money than you want to give it.

Thanks for sharing, Rick! I just love reading what you've written. I should do it more often! What a keen sense of humor you have! I'm not sure who you inherited it from, but just maybe it passed through some of my genes (it definitely did not "hang on" to any of mine!)

Love you,
Mom

No, this was a quick edit in Photoshop yesterday on the MAX on the way to work (which is why there's no higher res version linked, it's not high enough quality for that). I didn't manage anything useful last night, not even a good game of String. Which might be why Emma took it out on the yarn after I fell asleep ...

I'll have to give him a read once I finish up my Jane Austen book.

The wolverines were kinder to me this morning, no bloodshed, but they did knock my lens cap off of my big lens, it fell so far under the car that I had to get down on my knees in the mud to get it.

But I'll take muddy knees over bloody fingers every time ;)
